How to Replace Metal Halide & High Pressure Sodium Lamps with E40 Retrofit LED Bulbs
If you are running warehouses, factories, workshops or parking lots with outdated high bay lighting, switching from metal halide (MH) and high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps to E40 Bulb, E40 HIGHBAY, and E40 Retrofit Light is one of the most cost-effective lighting upgrades available today. Our high-efficiency 135LM/W E40 Bulb series including 100W, 150W, 200W and 240W E40 Bulb delivers stable, bright output while cutting power consumption, heat output and maintenance frequency drastically. This guide walks you through old fixture removal, safe retrofit steps, critical precautions and clear wattage matching for your E40 retrofit project.
Traditional metal halide and high pressure sodium high bay lights have long been widely used with E40 mogul bases. However, these HID lamps suffer from low luminous efficiency, long warm-up time, high heat generation, frequent burnout and high running costs. The E40 Retrofit Light is designed to reuse your existing E40 high bay housing, no full fixture replacement required. Our 100W 150W 200W 240W E40 Bulb with 135LM/W luminous efficacy brings instant-on performance, consistent colour rendering and 50,000+ hour service life, ideal for E40 HIGHBAY retrofit in industrial and commercial spaces.
Safety comes first for every E40 Bulb retrofit. Metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps run at high temperature and rely on ballast, ignitor and capacitor to work.
Cut power off at the circuit breaker, not only the wall switch. Use a voltage tester to confirm zero power on the E40 socket. Lock and tag the breaker to avoid accidental power restoration.
Let the old MH or HPS lamp cool down completely. Hot HID bulbs can cause severe burns and may shatter when touched. Wear insulated gloves and safety goggles during the whole operation.
Confirm your fixture base is standard E40 mogul base, matching our E40 Retrofit Light. Check the fixture voltage range before installing 100W 150W 200W 240W E40 Bulb.
Important note: Our E40 HIGHBAY LED retrofit bulbs work on direct line voltage. The original HID ballast, ignitor and capacitor must be bypassed or removed. Leaving the old ballast in circuit will burn out your E40 Bulb immediately and create fire risk.
Follow this standard removal workflow for E40 high bay fixtures:
After full cooling and power lockout, gently unscrew the old metal halide bulb or high pressure sodium bulb out of the E40 socket. Dispose of HID lamps following local hazardous lighting waste regulations.
Open the high bay fixture housing to access the internal wiring compartment. Locate the HID ballast, ignitor and capacitor connected to the E40 socket.
Disconnect wires from ballast, ignitor and capacitor. Take out these three components entirely for the best long-term reliability of your E40 Retrofit Light.
Rewire the E40 socket directly to mains Live (L) and Neutral (N). Double-check all wiring joints are insulated and tightly fixed. No ballast, ignitor or capacitor should remain in the circuit for our 100W, 150W, 200W, 240W E40 Bulb.
Inspect the E40 socket condition: replace cracked, corroded or loose E40 base before screwing in your new E40 HIGHBAY LED bulb. Poor socket contact causes flickering and overheating of E40 retrofit bulbs.
Once bypass wiring is finished, carefully screw your selected E40 Bulb into the cleaned E40 socket. Do not over-tighten the LED bulb to avoid damaging the base or internal driver. Restore power and test: the 135LM/W E40 Retrofit Light will light up instantly, no waiting time like MH/HPS lamps. Check for flicker, abnormal noise or overheating. If problems appear, cut power and recheck wiring and E40 socket connections.
Our E40 HIGHBAY LED bulbs run at 135 lumens per watt. Below is the recommended equivalent replacement guide for 100W 150W 200W 240W E40 Bulb:
100W E40 Bulb (13,500 Lumens @135LM/W): Replaces 250W Metal Halide / 250W High Pressure Sodium lamp, perfect for low-height warehouse E40 high bay retrofit, workshop and loading area lighting.
150W E40 Bulb (20,250 Lumens @135LM/W): Replaces 400W Metal Halide / 400W High Pressure Sodium lamp, the most popular E40 Retrofit Light for standard warehouse E40 HIGHBAY upgrade.
200W E40 Bulb (27,000 Lumens @135LM/W): Replaces 600W Metal Halide / 600W High Pressure Sodium lamp, suitable for high ceiling factories, exhibition halls and large logistics zones.
240W E40 Bulb (32,400 Lumens @135LM/W): Replaces 700W – 750W Metal Halide / High Pressure Sodium lamp, designed for extra high bay, big stadium auxiliary lighting and large yard E40 retrofit projects.
Reminder: Lumen matching is the core rule for E40 Bulb retrofit. Old HID lamps usually only reach 70–90LM/W, so our 135LM/W E40 Retrofit Light delivers equal or brighter illumination at far lower wattage. If you require higher uniformity, you can choose one wattage up in our 100W 150W 200W 240W E40 Bulb range.
Do not use our E40 Bulb with dimmers unless the model is marked dimmable. Most standard E40 Retrofit Light is non-dimmable.
Keep good ventilation around the E40 retrofit bulb; enclosed sealed fixtures may shorten LED service life.
For bulk warehouse E40 high bay renovation, all 100W 150W 200W 240W E40 Bulb share the same E40 base, making stock management and maintenance simple.
Compared with brand-new high bay fixtures, E40 Retrofit Light greatly cuts material and labour cost, and speeds up the whole lighting upgrade schedule.
Retrofitting old E40 base metal halide and high pressure sodium high bay lights with our 100W 150W 200W 240W E40 Bulb (135LM/W) is a mature, reliable lighting solution. As long as you fully remove or bypass the original ballast, ignitor and capacitor, follow power lockout safety steps and select the right wattage E40 Retrofit Light according to our matching table, your E40 HIGHBAY lighting will enjoy instant energy saving, lower maintenance and better light quality.
